Born Ashton, Lancs 1923, the son of an Army Major. He was a House Prefect, Corporal in the JTC and in the Modern VIth Form. ‘He came from an army family and was destined for an army career from nearly age. In spite of poor eyesight his determination carried him through’ (Chronicle). He joined an Officer Cadet Training Unit in 1941 and was commissioned in the Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment (The Sherwood Foresters) later the same year. Throughout he had to fight against problems with his eyesight and eventually achieved his ambition late in the war as an Infantry Subaltern - ‘one of that gallant band of unsung heroes’ (Chronicle), He survived the war but ‘met his death through a tragic accident (gunshot wounds) for which his defective eyesight was largely responsible’ (Chronicle).
