Born 1937, the younger of two SES brothers, the sons of the Cranwell College Rector. House Prefect, 2nd Rugby Football XV, Sacristan, GCE O and A levels, Sgt CCF, Upper Science VIth Form. After leaving SES he entered Cranwell RAF College, and was killed in a flying accident over the College in January 1959. ‘’Michael Dickinson’s many friends both from St. Edward’s and at Hendon, where his father is Rector, will have felt profound sense of shock and grief at his tragic accident while flying. Anyone who knew him both at school and in his home life will have been charmed by his abounding energy and gaiety and approved his breath of interesting local and rural pursuits and personalities. Like many of his generation at St. Edward’s, he combined a considerable degree of attainment with an essential simplicity and directness of character and outlook. There was never a trace of Smart-Alec or the equally tedious Angry Young Man about him. He had quite deliberately chosen the RAF as his career., and it was good to know, though not surprising, that he had, with growing maturity, established his influence and won the respect of his contemporaries and juniors at Cranwell’ (former member of staff).
