Buried Unknown Remembered Roll of Honour - Special Forces, Special Memorial on the mountain. Not on any St. Edward’s School Memorial* - NEEDS CORRECTING. Born 1936, the oldest of three SES brothers. School Prefect, Passed GCSE O and A Levels, Swimming Team, Sacristan, Chairman, Debating Society, Hon Sec Lit Society, Secretary, Sailing Club, School Play, Petty Officer RN Section CCF, History VIth Form. After leaving went up to Trinity College, Oxford 1957-8. Her Majesty’s Overseas Civil Service West Indies. Was killed in the helicopter crash on the Mull of Kintyre on 2 June 1996 which killed all 25 passengers and 4 crew on board, it had been on route from RAF Aldergrove to Fort George near Inverness. The weather was overcast and thick fog in places and the helicopter struck a rocky outcrop just east of the Mull of Kintyre Lighthouse. At the time of this accident Robert Deverell had been awarded the MBE (for his work in Fiji) in 1970, and the CB in 1992. His title was the Director and Co-ordinator of Intelligence in Northern Ireland. Among the passengers were almost all the United Kingdom’s senior Northern Ireland Intelligence experts. Eventually the cause of the accident was attributed to pilot error, but this was later contested.
