Born Wortley, Yorkshire 1915, the younger of two SES brothers. He was a School Prefect, a member of the 2nd Rugby Football XV 1933, 2nd XI Cricket 1934, the Swimming team, a Sergeant in the OTC and in Form Vc. ‘He had a most amiable and friendly manner, and many will remember his kindness and the helping hand he extended to the new boys in Sing’s House, over which he presided at the end of his time. He played his full part in all activities of the School. Without being outstanding in any one permanent activity, he was ready and keen to do his best for all. He learnt with determination the qualities of leadership and force’ (Chronicle). In 1939 he was commissioned in the Royal Artillery (TA) as a Second Lieutenant and Captain by 1940. In 1943 he was a Major with the 71st Field Regiment, Royal Artillery in North Africa where he was Mentioned in Dispatches. He moved onto the invasion of Italy and was killed in action at Cassino in February 1944.
