Age 29
Buried Liverpool (Allerton) Cemetery Remembered The St. Edward’s School WW2 Memorial
Born Liverpool in 1913. He was a House Prefect, in the School Rowing VIII 1932, the Athletics Team, a Corporal in the OTC and in the ‘Special’ Form. After leaving school he worked in the marble business in Liverpool and was commissioned in the Royal Engineers (TA) as a Second Lieutenant. He was married in 1939. When war was declared he joined the R.A.F on the first day and was posted to the Middle East. Sadly after fifteen months, he was seriously injured and invalided out the service. ‘Most men would have accepted the doctors’ decision but it was no surprise to those who knew his determined character to hear his of his efforts to serve again. Both the Fleet Air Arm and Royal Air Force refused him due to his medical record - but finally he found an opportunity in the civilian-based Air Transport Auxiliary and it was here after twelve months that his gallant record was brought to an end’ (Chronicle). He died in an air crash over Mollington, near Chester late in 1942. The official report stated:- ‘The aircraft flew into wires and crashed at Mollington 3 miles north of Chester while flying low during a Ferry Flight’.
