Born Cardiff, South Wales 1919. He was in the ‘Special’ Form on leaving. ‘He will be remembered for his cheerful and healthy outlook and for his quiet efficiency in everything that he did. ‘He contributed to School life in happy companionship and loyalty to good causes, he had many treasured friendships’ (Chronicle). He joined the Merchant Navy in 1936 after leaving School, as an Engineering Officer. Once war was declared he was posted to SS “Hertford”, a 10,000 ton vessel transferred to Britain from Germany as part of the Great War reparations. On 20.58 hrs the unescorted vessel was hit by two torpedos fired by U-Boat U-571, 200 miles south of Halifax, Canada. A third torpedo followed half an hour later and the ship sank. Four crew members, including Stratton, were lost. Thirty-seven further crew were picked up by other British ships and landed at Halifax.
