Buried No Known Grave Remembered The St. Edward’s School WW2 Memorial
Born in South Africa in 1918, the son of a clergyman. Always known as ‘Teddy’. ‘He was at the School just over two years and in that time showed remarkable ability at every game and branch of athletics’ (Chronicle). He was in the School’s 2nd Cricket XI and the Remove A Form on leaving. After schooling he left for South Africa and in 1940 joined the Royal South African Air Force. By 1942 he was a Lieutenant with 24 Squadron, Bomber Command, flying US-produced Vultee A-31 Bombers. He married in 1938. He was killed in action over the Mareth Line in Tunisia The Official Report later stated:- ‘Shot down by flak during a raid on enemy forces defending The Mareth Line, two of the crew survived and were captured’.
