He was a House Prefect, School Rowing IV 1931, 2nd XV Rugby Football, Shooting VIII, School Play, Sergeant OTC & Classical VIth Form. ‘All through his School career, he gave his best, holding a good balance between intellectual achievement and athletics. He was in the Classical VIth, the School Play and represented his House in boxing, swimming, shooting and especially on the river (his great forte). He was a member of the School IV and Shooting VIII. He was a House Prefect and in that capacity served the House well. There are many vivid memories of a strong and reliable personality, saying little, but doing a lot more’ (Chronicle). He went up to Oriel College, Oxford leaving two years later. After a time in the business world and the war interrupting, he joined the R.A.F.V.R. in 1940. He chose to become a Flying Instructor in the General Duties Branch of the service and was lost in a flying accident in late 1943 over Kent. ‘Spun into the ground at Bate’s Lodge near Haddon, Hunts when control was lost while performing aerobatics during a training flight’ (Official Report).
