Born Heswall 1922, the son of a Lieutenant Commander in the Royal Navy. ‘He arrived from his beloved Border Country as a very small boy, intensely patriotic and devoted to the sea’ (Chronicle). He was a House Prefect, a Corporal in the OTC and in the Science VI th Form. With the advent of war, he joined the Merchant Navy as an Apprentice. He was lost very early in the war, when his ship RMS ‘Domala’ was destroyed by enemy aircraft close to Southampton. One hundred and eight out of the two hundred and ninety-one crew were killed . The ship was later salvaged and re-named ‘Empire Attendant’ which was eventually sunk off the West Coast of Africa in 1942.
