Born Chesterfield 1917, the son of a clergyman. He was a House Prefect, in the School Play, a Sergeant in the OTC and in the Classical VIth Form. ‘While at the School, he heard the call of the Empire and his clear brain and equable temperament fitted him well for his work. He was a boxer of merit’ (Chronicle). He was at Birmingham University 1936-9 achieving an LLB. He married in 1940. With the advent of war he was commissioned with the South Wales Borderers in 1940, rising to Lieutenant in 1942 when he joined Orde Wingate’s Chindits First Tour. In 1944, he was attached to the 7th Battalion, The Nigeria Regiment and again with the Chindits in their Second Tour behind Japanese lines. He was killed in action during this tour ‘somewhere in Burma, well behind enemy lines’.
