Born in Vardal, Norway 1912, he spent only three terms at SES, the first Norwegian to ever attend Teddies, but in that time made many friends. He was later also responsible for the first ever OSE dinner held in Oslo. He was in the ‘Special Form’ when he left. He attended Oslo University 1930-5 where he studied Law, and was appointed a Barrister in The Court of Appeal in 1938. He is described as a ‘Painter and Patriot’ in the Rolls as he exhibited at the Annual States Exhibition of Art just before the war began. ‘He was torn between the choice of a comfortable legal practice and a hazardous career in art and in was only in 1940 that he decided that what he wanted in life was best given to art’ (Chronicle). When his country was invaded in 1940, he moved his family to the comparative safety of Trondheim before leaving, on skies, to join ‘some fellow Norwegians to oppose the German advance at a bridge head. He was killed on April 21, 1940, trying to help a wounded friend in no-man’s land. The innate beauty of his character and his constant search for beauty in his fellowmen and in nature makes his friends know that his death was not in vain’ (Chronicle).
