Buried Cassino War Cemetery, Lazio, Italy Remembered The St. Edward’s WW2 Memorial

Born in Hampshire in 1918, the son of Air Chief Marshal, Sir Roderick Maxwell Hill. ‘He was a particularly keen and energetic boy and put a fine spirit into his work and games. Among his many qualities, he will remembered for his gift of real friendship. He displayed cheerfulness and sympathy in a unique genre and these qualities were a constant source of strength to others and won him many lasting friends (Chronicle)’. He was in the Lower Science VIth when he left. He attended the Royal Military Academy at Woolwich 1937 and was commissioned in the Royal Artillery in 1938. A year later he was in France with the BEF during the first stages of WW2. He was married in 1941. In 1941 he was seconded to the R.A.F.V.R. and qualified as a Flight Lieutenant by 1944 attached to 13 Squadron, Bomber Command flying the American-made Martin Baltimore Attack Bombers in Italy. He was killed in action, shot down over Cassino in June 1944 and buried in the War Cemetery at Cassino, no further details known.
