Born in London 1920, of an Oxford family. He was a House Prefect and the Vd Form. “He had the charm of a local boy who seemed unaware of his talents: but the talents were there, among them courage and an innate sense of right’ (Chronicle). When he left St. Edward’s, he served an engineering apprenticeship with Leyland’s of Preston then in 1940 joined the R.A.F.V.R. By 1943 he was a qualified Flight Officer with 186 Squadron, Fighter Command flying Hurricanes. Selected to undertake special ‘Hazardous’ (undefined) training he was killed. ‘’Flew into high ground at Shalloch-on-Minnoch, 12 miles southeast of Girvan, Ayrshire in low cloud’ (official report).
