Born Reading, Berkshire 1924. He was a School Prefect, a Choral Scholar, in the Choir, Company Sergeant Major in the OTC, and in the History VIth Form. ‘He was possessed of great strength of character, and in kindness and thoughtfulness for others, he was outstanding. Whether in the House or at Harvest Camps, his tact, firmness, readiness to do the jobs and ability to mix with others were invaluable. He was keenly involved in music and was an able and promising organist’ (Chronicle). He joined the war effort straight from School, being commissioned in the 2nd Battalion, (The Queen’s Westminsters), King’s Royal Rifle Corps in 1943. A year later he was already a Lieutenant. He was killed in action in near Kleve in Germany, shot by a sniper ‘going to the assistance of some of his men who were wounded’ (Chronicle). ‘As an individual he had a host of friends, we miss his vitality and cheerfulness, his common sense and outstanding bravery’ (a brother officer).
