Buried No Known Grave Remembered The St. Edward’s School WW2 Memorial

Born East Retford, Notts 1922, son of an OSE. A member of the choir and Shell B Form. ‘He was a late developer and as he left young, he had no chance to come into prominence in the School. But the foundations were laid of a fine affectionate character, which led him to volunteer for service before his time’ (Chronicle). In 1940 he joined the Royal West Kent Regiment as a Private, there years later moving onto an Officer Training Unit. In 1943 he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant with the Royal West Kents, later transferring to the Queen’s Royal Regiment (The West Surreys) in 1943 and posted to Italy. He was killed in action during the Fourth Battle of Cassino in January 1944 and has no known grave.
