Born Hendon, Middlesex 1913, the elder of two SES brothers. He was an Exhibitioner, Head of School 1932, Rugby Football XV 1931/2, Cricket XI 1932, the Boxing Team, the School Play, Sacristan, Under-Officer OTC, Editor of the ‘Chronicle’, Scout Troop Leader and in the Modern VIth Form. After leaving St. Edward’s he held a position ‘in commerce’ and played Rugby Football for Yorkshire. In 1940 he joined an Officer Training Unit and the same year was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Royal Horse Artillery, rising to Captain 306 Field Regiment, Wast African Artillery by 1945. He was killed in an air crash on 29 November 1944 on a Lockheed Aircraft in which he was a passenger, the wreckage of which was found under the north side of Kinangop Peak in the Aberdare Range at 12,000 ft, 45 miles north of Nairobi, Kenya. All on board (4 crew and 7 passengers, including Army and R.A.F. personnel, were all killed on impact).
