Born Birmingham 1911, the elder of two SES brothers, both lost in the Second World War. He was in the Lower IVa Form when he left. ‘Beginning at Cowell’s as a somewhat reserved and retiring boy, he blossomed into a powerful young man, whose joy was not in books but motor cycles and farming’ (Chronicle). After leaving his schooling, he first tried his hand at Silver Fox farming the later went into more traditional farming. When war broke out he enlisted as a Lance Bombardier in the Royal Artillery in 1939, before transferring to the 83rd Battery, 16th Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment in 1941, with whom he was posted to the Middle East. It was there in Cairo that he contracted general peritonitis from which he died while still in service. He was buried in Cairo. His younger brother, Thomas, also an OSE, had been killed in action two months earlier.
