Born Mansfield, Notts 1911, the son of a clergyman. He was a School Prefect, a member of the Rowing IV 1930 and the Athletics team, Captain of the 2nd Rugby Football 2nd XV, Captain of Fives, and an Under-Officer in the OTC. In the Lower Science VIth when he left. He went up to Birmingham University attaining a BA, where he was President of the Guild of Undergraduates and a member of their Rugby Football XV. He went on to be an Assistant Master at Ottershaw College, Woking 1934-9. He joined the Shropshire Light Infantry (TA) in 1939, and in 1940 was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the regiment, rising to Captain by 1942. He was killed in action during the landings at Anzio and was buried in the Beach Head Cemetery, close to where he fell. ‘Few boys, as a School Prefect or Head of their House, could have accomplished more for others than he did. His efficiency, both in work and games and general School interests, was something that cannot be forgotten but it was so unassuming and so much of his character and general bearing, that it could easily have escaped notice had it not been for the mark it made on his friends’ (Chronicle).
