Born in Barton-upon-Irwell, Salford 1920, the elder of two SES brothers, he was at the School only a short time. He was in the ‘Special Form’ on leaving. He took an engineering apprenticeship at the Vulcan Locomotive Factory at Newton le-Willows He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Manchester Regiment (TA) in 1939, the transferred to Malta when the war broke out. Once there he took part in the heroic defence of the island until he was killed in September 1942, while defusing a time-bomb with his men. ‘We who knew him here will always remember him with pride and affection’ (Chronicle). He was buried on the Island of Malta.
