Born 1865 in Dundee, Scotland, one of two SES brothers, the sons of a clergyman. He had an illustrious School career, Head Boy in 1884, Rugby XV 1883-4 (Captain in 1884), Cricket XI 1882-5 (Captain in 1885), Captain of Fives. Also a fine athlete. On leaving he was in the VIth Form. Went up to Merton College, Oxford in 1885. Later left for Egypt becoming involved in ‘earth and canal work’ in the Middle East. With war breaking out he returned to England and was commissioned in the Oxford & Buckinghamshire Light Infantry in November 1914. Shortly afterwards he was taken out of the army due to his previous work experience and returned to Egypt in order to oversee major road works for the movement of troops. He had a history of heart problems and had been warned about over-working, advice he ignored and he died of heart failure in July 1916. He was buried in Egypt and had never been included in any SES ROH lists to memorials until 2017.
