TEDDIES AT A GLANCE
St Edward’s sits on 100 acres at the heart of a city – exceptional for a boarding school. Oxford is renowned worldwide for its rich intellectual and cultural life.
Brand new facilities at the heart of the School include the striking, contemporary Christie Centre with versatile learning spaces to match our forward-looking academic programme. The stunning Olivier Hall brings the growing Teddies community together for concerts, performances and countless other occasions.
The weekly and full boarding arrangements at Teddies mean that pupils can choose to stay at School for the whole weekend or go home on Saturday afternoon until Sunday evening. The outstanding weekend programme offering sport, drama, concerts, expeditions, rehearsals, BBQs, dinners, talks and trips means that around half opt to stay in School at the weekend – when they are also free to visit the centre of Oxford.
The Warden Alastair Chirnside became Warden in September 2021 with a mission to ensure that ‘St Edward’s leads the way in co-educational boarding, in educational innovation and in the wellbeing of pupils and staff.’ Alastair attended the Dragon School, leaving with a King’s Scholarship to Eton; he gained a congratulatory First in Classics and French at Merton College, Oxford, and a half blue in rowing. Before Teddies, Alastair worked in the City, and at Eton and Harrow.

Togetherness ‘Children take many things from school, including their academic qualifications, an interest in ideas and unforgettable memories, but the most important for a successful and fulfilling life is their ability to relate to others – all others, not just people like them. For the development of that emotional intelligence in our increasingly integrated and complex society, co-education has never been more important.’ THE WARDEN

City Life Our location in the heart of the city means that our pupils stay in touch with our local community. They run activities for primary school children, support local charities, help out at the city farm on school grounds, play music for the elderly and take part in public events such as marshalling the Oxford Half Marathon or tackling city clean-ups.

Day pupils have a timetable which encourages them to make the most of the School’s outstanding range of opportunities. Sharing a room in a boarding House means they are as much part of the community as their boarding peers. Day pupils leave from 6.30pm but many stay for the longer day until 9pm – for supper, for supervised study, to attend regular evening talks from Oxford University academics and the School’s own experts, and to enjoy leisure time with their friends. ‘Leading the way in educational initiatives is instinctive for this dynamic Oxford school.’ TATLER SCHOOLS GUIDE
The Careers Education Department is embedded in the academic timetable and is run by a team with extensive connections to different industries and professions. North Oxford’s fashionable Summertown is two minutes from School. Pupils and staff alike enjoy its many cafés and independent shops, and the convenience of nearby supermarkets and pharmacies. Oxford city centre is five minutes away by bus or bicycle.
To celebrate our 160 year anniversary, we are aiming to increase our free or significantly subsidised places to 160.
Every year the School takes at least one show to the Edinburgh Fringe – the largest arts festival in the world.
Pupils join us from around 60 different schools of all types and many have never boarded before, so everyone is looking to make new friends and connections.
Wellbeing for our whole community is paramount: we’ve introduced a new wellbeing programme and recently appointed a Director of Wellbeing and School Psychologist. Pupils and staff all look out for each other.
