Born 1895 in Exeter, the son of a clergyman, he excelled as a musician at the School and was in the Shell Form on leaving. He joined the Royal School of Music in London as a pianist in 1913 and showed ‘much promise’. He enlisted as a Rifleman in the 3/22 London Regiment (Irish Fusiliers) in 1915 and transferred to the 3/12 Battalion London Regiment (Rangers) in January 1916, leaving for France in July 1916. He was killed in action in December 1917 at the Hill Khurbet Adasch, fighting Turkish forces, four miles north of Jerusalem, together with over fifty men of his regiment.
