The younger of two SES brothers, born 1899, in Bath. He was a gifted student scholastically as well as a good sportsman. A School Prefect, member of the School Cricket XI 1914, a Lance Corporal in the OTC and in the VIth Form. He went up to Bristol University in January 1916, joined their OTC on arrival and was immediately transferred to Sandhurst Military College in October. One year later he was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the Queen’s Royal West Kent Regiment in September 1917, transferring to the Royal Air Force (Night Bombers) in 1918. During this time he was involved ‘in ground attacks and was constantly employed with the night-bombing squadron in attacks on German lines’ (Chronicle). He was killed returning from a night bombing mission, just before the armistice, on 9th November 1918, crashing into another aircraft on landing at St. Erme, near Lyon in France. He was buried after the armistice.
