Eldest son of a clergyman, born in Madras, India in 1869, his time at SES was a short one and no records survive, except that he was in the Shell Form, Upper School, when he left. He settled for a life in farming in Canada where he also got married. When war was declared, he enlisted as a Private in the 46th Battalion, 10th Canadian Infantry (Alberta Regiment) in January 1916, having left his holding in the hands of his wife and a manager. Joining up was not easy as he had a history of heart problems, but he eventually succeeded. After a month in England, his regiment were sent to France and he was wounded in February 1916. Recovering and returning to his regiment, he was killed in action during the Battle of Mont Sorrel in 3 June 1916. During this action 8430 Canadians were killed in trying to capture this strategic hill in the Ypres Salient of Belgium over 11 days.
