After leaving the School he joined the Royal Marines at the tail end of WW2, serving in India, Pakistan and Cyprus. He was also attached to the Royal West Kent Regiment, The Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry and The Royal Hampshire Regiment at various times (when he he was awarded an emergency commission) in 1946. After leaving the army he was at Exeter University for a short time before leaving for Malaya where he worked as a rubber planter in one of the worst areas at that time for terrorism in what was then called the Anti-British National Liberation War (1948-60). He was ambushed and killed by terrorists during his rounds on the estate. His friends wrote to the School to say that he was loved and respected by all who served under him and that he lived and died a gallant young man (Chronicle).
