Born Jaffa, Isreal 1921, the son of an army family. He was in the Vd form on leaving. ‘He left earlier than most boys, but had already given promise of more than average achievement in most activities’ (Chronicle). He joined the war effort on leaving school as a Leading Aircraftman with the R.A.F.V.R. He trained as a pilot and on qualifying for his wings joined 41 Squadron, Fighter Command, flying Spitfires in 1942. A married man. In June the same year he was killed in a crash landing, returning from a mission, with his Spitfire already damaged by enemy action, and died of his injuries.
