Born Brighton 1922, the middle of three SES brothers. He was an Exhibitioner and a member of the Science VIth Form ‘He was a boy of great kindness and ability both at work and games. He achieved a fine School Certificate and Higher Certificate, the latter not generally known due to absence at a critical time when he did his work by post’ (Chronicle). On leaving school he served and apprenticeship at Vickers-Armstrong in 1940 which he passed with flying colours after which he left to join the Fleet Air Arm where he showed much promise. By 1944 he was a Leading Airman with 741 Squadron, Fleet Air Arm operating off H.M.S. ‘Condor’. He was killed in an aerial incident near Arbroath, Scotland while training as an Observer. The official report read as follows: - ‘Lost without trace during a night sea search exercise over the North Sea’.
