Born Nottingham 1921, the younger of two SES brothers, sons of a medical doctor. ‘As a boy of wonderful control of his feelings, he was well fitted for authority and was a School Prefect and a member of the School XI’ (Chronicle). He was a School Prefect, Cricket XI 1940, Choir, Sergeant OTC, and in the Maths VIth Form. He joined the war effort straight from School with the RAFVR as a Leading Aircraftman in 1941 rising to Sergeant Pilot the same year. He qualified as air crew in 1942 with 103 Squadron, Bomber Command, flying Wellingtons. He was killed in action over Germany on the ‘thousand bomber’ raid on Cologne. His aircraft was hit by ground fire and there were no survivors. He was at first reported as ‘missing’ then ‘presumed killed’ before official confirmation came through.
