Born Dartford, Kent 1911, the son of a clergyman, he was a School Prefect, a member of the School Rowing IV 1929 and 1930 (Captain of Boats), the 2nd Rugby Football XV and the Athletics and Boxing Team. He was also in the Choir, and the School Play, He was a member of the ‘Special’ Form. ‘A School Prefect who attained a distinction at athletics while at the School. He was in the School IV and the Boxing team’ (Chronicle). He joined the RAF after leaving School in 1932. A Flight Lieutenant by the start of the war and a Squadron Leader of 114 Squadron Bomber Command in 1940 flying Blenheim aircraft. He was married in 1939. He flew out of Leuchars, Scotland on an anti-shipping strike off the coast of Norway in April 1941 and ‘was shot down by a Bf110 fighter during an attack on an enemy convoy off Farsund, Norway’ (Official Report).
