Born 1911, the eldest of of three OSE brothers and one of the first to attend the newly-formed Menzies’ Boarding House in 1925. He was in the Modern Shell Form when he left. ‘A wild and irresponsible boy in those early days, he was none the less a credit to his House’ (Chronicle). On leaving he took up photography professionally, studying his subject in Canada to begin with before returning to England at the outbreak of WW2. He joined the RAFVR as an Aircraftman 2 in 1940, before qualifying as a Pilot Officer with 101 Squadron Bomber Command, flying Wellingtons. He was reported as ‘missing’ in December 1941 during a mission over Dusseldorf and was later confirmed as killed in action. His aircraft had in fact been shot down by German Air Ace Werner Stubb 7 miles South West of Monchengladbach, later reports discovered.
