An Exhibitioner. He was a House Prefect, an Exhibitioner, a Sergeant in the OTC, and in the History VIth Form. ‘Throughout this days at School, he displayed an attractive and well-balanced temperament. His strength lay in simple sense of proportion about ordinary things and in a capacity for influencing others by his quiet sympathy and generosity of feeling. While achieving many successes which came to those who have definite capacity in their work, he displayed a keen interest in games and athletics generally and contributed a fine spirit and example to the part he played in them’ (Chronicle). He went up to St. John’s College, Cambridge as an Exhibitioner in 1940 but for a short time only as his studies were interrupted by the war. In 1940 he joined the Worcestershire Regiment as a Private, gaining a commission a year later in the same regiment. He saw action in Madagascar, India and Persia. By 1943 he was a Lieutenant, transferred to the 2nd Battalion Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers in Italy. He was killed early in 1944 during a night-time attack across a river on the Gustav Line in Italy.
