Born 1921, the younger of two SES brothers, sons of an Army family. ‘He was in the Lower VIth. In School and out, in health and in sickness, Michael’s cheerful disposition always prevailed. He believed in being happy and in making others happy’ (Chronicle). He was in the Lower VIth when he left. He went up to Wye College and then London University. When war was declared he joined the R.A.F.V.R. as a Leading Aircraftman in 1940 rising to Sergeant by 1941. In 1942 he qualified as a Pilot Officer with 77 Squadron, Bomber Command flying Whitley Bombers. He was reported as ‘missing’ in March 1942 on route across the North Sea to bomb Emden in Lower Saxony in Germany. He and his crew were ‘shot down by a night fighter into the North Sea, North of Terschelling, during a raid on Emden’ (Official Report). It was his nineteenth operational flight.
