Born Scarborough, North Yorkshire 1910. Employed pre-war at Parnall Aircraft Ltd at Yate, Bristol. When war broke out since he was in a reserved occupation did not join the regular forces but chose to join the Bristol Home Guard instead. He was killed in an air raid on 27th February when a single Heinkel Bomber, piloted by Oblt Hermann Lohmann), managed to do considerable damage to the Parnall Works complex, killing fifty-three employees in the process, Rupert Newman amongst them. The bombs used had time-delayed fuses, therefore did not explode until ten minutes after dropping increasing the number of casualties.
