Born 1918 son of a Royal Naval Staff Surgeon. ‘He came to the School with a real desire to learn, considering aptitude with a deep sense of humour. This was soon apparent, he found friends and he made his mark. His admirable north country determination and perseverance doubtless made him a formidable fighter-pilot’ (Chronicle). He was in the Lower Modern VIth Form on leaving. When war broke out he joined the R.A.F.V.R. and by 1940 was a qualified Sgt Pilot with 80 Squadron, Fighter Command, flying Hurricanes. He was killed in action, shot down by a Bf109 west of Aroma during an attack on a mountain and blockhouse southwest of El Adem.
