Born 1919 the son of an Army family from Berkshire. ‘He had a slight physique and has a rather shy and appealing manner. He also possessed an independent, humorous and ingenious mind. He would never accept traditional precepts without thought or question, but, once convinced, he gave freely his affection and loyalty’ (Chronicle). He was in the Va Form he he left. On leaving school he joined de Havilland as an apprentice before enlisting in the R.A.F.V.R. in 1938 training to be a Pilot Officer flying Hurricanes in Fighter Command. He married in 1940. Once war started he was immediately in action and was killed covering the retreat for Dunkirk, shot down by a Bf109 at Ramegnies-Chin, Belgium during a lone patrol; he bailed out but his parachute caught fire and he died in the descent. ‘He has now given his life for the cause which convinced him of truth and justice’ (Chronicle).
