Born 1914, the elder of two SES brothers. ‘He was a quiet unassuming boy of great charm and a very great knowledge of mechanics’ (Chronicle). He went up to Reading University in 1931. Later worked as a ‘Press Artist’. Also rowed for the Thames RC 1937-8. In 1940 he enlisted in the Royal Berkshire Regiment as a Lance Corporal later transferring to the RAFVR, a Flight Lieutenant in No. 2 Squadron, Bomber Command by 1943, flying Mosquitos. He was lost in action in mid-April 1943. ‘Lost without trace during a Lagoon Photo Recce Sortie looking for shipping off the Dutch coast between Vlieland and Egmond’ (Official Report). No wreckage found.
