Born 1914 in Australia, ‘he overcame an early disability with characteristic determination, he excelled at rowing’. He went up to Jesus College, Cambridge achieving a BA and rowing for his college in the Thames Cup VIII. He joined the Cambridge University Air Squadron in 1938. In 1939 he was called up and joined the RAFVR, joining Squadron 10 Bomber Command, flying Whitleys, from 1940 as a Pilot Officer. He was shot down North of Abbeville, while attacking enemy troop concentrations.
