Born in Alton, East Hampshire in 1886, the youngest son of a regular Army Major. Little is recorded off his time at the School, he was in the Middle Moderns Form when he left. He entered the Merchant Navy Service in 1906 in the de Wolff ’s Line, little is known how long he spent in their service. By 1912 he was a rubber planter in Malaya. With The Great War beginning, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the 8th Battalion, Royal West Kent Regiment in May 1915. The following January he was promoted to Captain, 9th Battalion Norfolk Regiment and sent to France.
