Buried No known grave Remembered Menin Gate Memorial Ypres, Belgium, The Great Yarmouth War Memorial, The St. Edward’s School Chapel (Wooden Plaque) and the Cloisters Stone Memorial Born 1896 in Ipswich, Suffolk, he had a long and distinguished School career. He was Head of School part of 1915, a member of the School Cricket XI 1914 and 1915 (when he was Captain) and a member of the Rugby Football XV 1914 and 1915 (when again he was Captain). He was an athlete of merit, winning the School’s Senior Mile Race in 1914 and 1915 (breaking the then record), he also won the the Senior ‘Headers’ in 1913 and 1914 and the Garnett Swimming Cup in 1914 and 1915, finally he was Captain of the School’s Fives team in 1915. To add to all these accomplishments ‘he was for a long while a very useful member of the choir’ (Chronicle). He was a Company Sergeant Major in the OTC, in the VIth Form on leaving. In November 1916 he joined the Inns of Court OTC and a month later was commissioned Second Lieutenant (on probation) in the 1/11th City of London Regiment (The Kensingtons). Very soon afterwards he was in France and was killed when a shell burst in his trench near Hooge, Ypres, Belgium in mid August 1917. His Brigade was in readiness for an attack, shells were falling all around and Ranson volunteered to stay with his men which cheered them up immensely for there was very bad cover, no trenches to speak of. Unfortunately, a shell found him and he was killed immediately. ‘He was a good Officer, a good commander and a gentlemen and he made the great sacrifice heroically’ (Company Commander).
