Born 1890 in Bloomsbury, London the younger of two SES brothers, he rowed in his Set Boat when it was second in the Bumpers of 1908; also a member of the School Rowing IV & VIII in 1908 and 1909, he was also in the 2nd XV Rugby Football XV and in the Upper IVth Form. In 1910 went up to Selwyn College, Cambridge and passed his degree in July 1914. He stroked for his College VIII for two years. In 1912, after serving his articles with Messrs. Marshall & Wilkinson, Solicitors, he resigned from the company. In 1913, he was married and fathered a son and a daughter. When the war broke out he applied for a commission and joined the Cambridge University OTC, transferring with a commission as a Second Lieutenant, 15th Battalion, The City of London Regiment (The Royal Fusiliers) in February 1915. He was wounded during the Second Battle of Ypres in 1915, returning to the front in September, now promoted to Captain. He was killed in action during the Somme Offensive in September 1916, his body found in front of the German trenches. ‘He was last seen leading his men in an attack. He was one of the best, straightest and most gallant fellows I have ever known’ (his Commanding Officer).
