Born 1870 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada the elder of two SES brothers. No record survives of his time at the School except that he was in the Shell Form on leaving. After St. Edward’s he went on to Westminster School to complete his education. In 1890 and 1891 he played rugby football for the Harlequins RFC and in 1891 was commissioned into the Border Regiment as a regular soldier. Adjutant in 1898. He served in the Boer War with the 1st Battalion, The Border Regiment and for a time was also attached to the Royal Sussex Regiment; during the war he saw action widely including, Natal, Colenso and the Relief of Ladysmith. He was Mentioned in Dispatches and badly wounded in 1900 and invalided home. He was awarded the King’s Medal with three Clasps. During his recuperation he was promoted to Captain with the Royal Sussex Regiment, then Major in 1905, Lt Colonel 1911. With the outbreak of war he was the Commanding Officer of the 1st Battalion the Royal Sussex Regiment and in July 1915 promoted to Brigadier General. In France in May 1916 he was again Mentioned in Dispatches. In June he was invalided home with Pneumonia and in November i/c of a Brigade in Blackpool. Promoted to Adjutant & Quarter-Master-General in Nov 1916, he was Mentioned in Dispatches for a third time in December 1917 and awarded The Order of St. Michael & St. George (CMNG) Dec 1917. He was honourably discharged due to ill-health contracted on active service in Feb 1918 and died of Pneumonia in October 1918. ‘He was a splendid example of the old army - no higher praise is possible’.
