AUTUMN MEETING ROYAL WIMBLEDON GOLF CLUB – OCTOBER 2024 Report by Charlie Reid (Segar’s, 1973-1978) O ctober saw the Martyrs Golfers return to Royal Wimbledon Golf Club for the first time in two years with the course upgrades fully completed. The course was in great condition after all the recent bad weather and we were blessed with a lovely sunny day. 24 OSE made the trip including four students and two under 30s, playing at subsidised rates – a great incentive to help younger OSE get involved in Martyrs Golf after leaving School. There were some good performances from our group and prizes for the winners. Nearest the pin went to Steve Baldwin (Field House, 1993-1998) on the 13th with a towering 6 iron to about 8ft, alas the birdie was elusive. Angus Withers Green (Segar’s, 2015-2020) had the longest drive at the 7th.

In the scratch competition Angus Withers Green pipped Rupert Shipperley (Kendall, 2006-2011) on count back, both recording 26pts,
and received the St Edward’s Salver.

The nett competition was won by third generation OSE Richard Redfern (Corfe, 1990-1995) with a magnificent 40pts and he was presented with the Autumn Cup. Ashley Wright (Tilly’s, 1990-1995) came in second with a very creditable 37pts.
Many thanks go to Mike Palau (Sing’s, 1959-1964) for his help in organising this event.

The scores in the main competition were not as high as normal but given how difficult the course was playing this was to be expected. The winner of the nett competition and winner of the Palau Bucket was Jack Redknap with 33 points, 5 points ahead of 2nd place Richard Redfern, a really good effort. The prize for the best scratch score was Jack Parry with 25 points, playing off +0.3. Tom Redfern won the nearest the pin, showing all his experience and being the only one to get his name on the card!
T he Martyrs spring meeting took place on a warm sunny spring day with a tricky 20mph easterly wind, with fast running fairways and very quick greens.A group of 22 Martyrs Jack Redknap, left, receives the Palau Bucket from Michael Palau, right.
