ST EDWARD’S

MARTYRS ROWING

the Prince Albert Cup for student coxed fours by the Newcastle University BC crew coxed by Sam Shuker (G, 2013-18). Despite Sam steering one of the best lines off the start, his crew could not match the power of a very high quality University of London BC boat who were the Cup’s winners this year. Ben Lewis (C, 1992-97) coached the Thames RC crew to victory in theWyfold Challenge Cup for men’s coxless fours, thus continuing his remarkable success as a coach for the club. Oli Knight (B, 2012-14) rowing at six for Molesey BC got to the final of the Thames Cup but they were beaten in a close half-a-length finish by Thames RC. Dmitrii Slipenkin (E, 2018-20) had his first HRR appearance racing for University of London BC in the Temple Challenge Cup, but sadly they were beaten in the semi-finals by Imperial College BC. Many congratulations must go to EdWarner (B, 1993-98) who is the Deputy to the Regatta Secretary and indeed to the Stewards of Henley Royal Regatta for putting on such an event in the face of so much uncertainty and so many limitations. Stewards include OSE, Patrick Delafield (E, 1959-64), Lynton Richmond (G, 1976-81) and Peter Thomas (E, 1958-63). In addition to the vast number of OSE attending in support of our Martyrs and Teddies crews it was terrific to have so many join us at the annual OSE Afternoon Tea. See you next year!

OSE AT HENLEY REGATTA QUALIFYING ROUND A Martyrs BC crew had a significant attempt at qualifying for theWyfold Challenge Cup (for coxless fours) but were a little beyond two seconds off qualification.Tom Middleton (E, 1989-94) also just missed out on a place in the draw with his Molesey BC Double the fastest non-qualifier. In the draw: Former Captains of Boats Charlie Gosling (B, 2011-16), in the Thames RC ‘B’VIII, and Ben Sthamer (B, 2012-17) for London RC, both competed in the Thames Cup. Alex Simmonds (E, 2007-12) raced for City of Oxford RC competing for theWyfold Challenge Cup, while Hamish Roots (B,1993-98) coached the Nottingham RC to the semi-finals of theWyfold Challenge. Hamish Floyd (F, 1988-93) in the Upper Thames ‘B’VIII coxed by Bea Crossley (K, 2005-07) qualified for the Thames Cup and got through to Friday. Bea also coxed the Upper Thames RCWomen’s ‘A’VIII, though they were unable to match Thames RC when they met them later the same day.

MARTYRS ROWING

The Martyrs Boat Club entered Henley Royal Regatta for the first time since rowing as part of the East India Club/Martyrs composite in 2016 and reaching the final of the Visitors Challenge Cup in 2008.The crew was originally comprised of Rupert Singfield (C, 2011-16), Barnaby Singfield (B, 2014-19), Alex Gowans (C,

2015-20) and ThibbyVerdin-Mulot (E, 2015-20). After a couple of weeks of training Barnaby sadly had to withdraw from the crew due to Covid and Freddie Myatt (H, 2010-12) stepped in to enable the crew to compete at Henley Town and Visitors’ Regatta in late July and the Qualifying event in early August. The crew has been coached by Max Thompson (B, 2016-18) and despite a good row on the day at Eton Dorney, the crew missed out on qualification for theWyfold Challenge Cup by only a few seconds.
