At The North Wall Photo Oxford:
Pictures from the Garden Oxford based photographer Paddy Summerfield published his first book Mother and Father in 2015, a photographic essay that quickly became a seminal text of domestic photography. Over the course of some twenty years he photographed his parents as they grew older, declined and disappeared. This exhibition features the work of seven leading documentary photographers who have responded to Summerfield’s photography, alongside some of his original prints. Free entry. Until 6 May. Jane Strother, a keen walker, explores landscapes, noting and recording marks of human activity or intervention, evidence of changing use. In this exhibition, subjects are rooted in these landscapes, including the south west coast path of Devon and Cornwall, extensive areas of fringing salt marshes in Essex and local field boundaries in Oxford. Teddies’ Teacher of Drama, actress and jazz vocalist Airlie Scott, is performing in this fantastic show capturing the vibrancy of Jazz Age Paris! Journey through the songs, clubs, and atmosphere of the era, seen through the memories of Eloise DeFleur. A hot jazz sandwich of French chanson, gypsy jazz, early swing, blues and American songbook classics popular in Paris from the roaring twenties through the occupation to liberation at the end of the Second World War. This inspirational exhibition celebrates the Bodleian Libraries’ acquisition of the archive of the British inventor of photography, William Henry Fox Talbot, and the legacy of his life and work. With items from the archive alongside works of contemporary artists, it brings the archive to life, showing how Talbot’s work influenced and inspired other artists. Free admission. Open 10.00am–5.00pm on Saturday, 11.00am–4.00pm on Sunday. Until 18th June.
Part of the UK’s oldest Botanic Garden - founded in 1621 - the beautiful Merton Borders have been created as an example of sustainable horticultural development, with the aim of minimal impact on the environment. With 85% of the plants established through the direct sowing of seed, the plants have been selected for their ability to withstand drought conditions and flower throughout the Spring and Summer in glorious colour. Appearance of the Law Modern Art Oxford Pembroke Street Centred around a series of three video works with interrelated themes, Appearance is a major new solo exhibition by Carey Young which explores relations between women, the camera and systems of power. Alongside the films, a selection of Young’s new and existing text and photographic works feature sites including prisons, legal borders and imaginary space, connecting law, architecture, language and the body.
