Weekends at Teddies Autumn Term 2022

Autumn Term 2022 WEEKENDS AT TEDDIES

WARDEN’S INTRODUCTION

Welcome to the Autumn Term at St Edward’s. For some of you, it will be your first experience of Teddies as parents and pupils; for others, it will involve transitioning into a new academic year, with new subjects, new challenges and new experiences. One constant outside the classroom is the extraordinary range of opportunities for pupils at Teddies to take part in activities, to attend concerts and events, to grow in independence and, above

all, to make memories with their friends. This brochure includes the best of those opportunities this term, on Saturday evenings and on Sundays. These weekend events not only offer pupils the chance for further engagement in the co-curriculum; they also give their families a chance to take part in school life by joining activities and attending events which bring our community together. Oxford itself has so much to offer in culture and in history that we have also included a section on some of the unmissable local places and events. I hope that pupils will enjoy using this brochure to make plans with their friends, and that parents will read it to make plans with their children. Every pupil’s experience of the Autumn Term at Teddies will be unique, and your choice among this range of opportunities will be part of it. Alastair Chirnside

Notes on the Weekend Programme All Chapel services and activities are open to families. Sports fixtures are listed online; see the website for full calendar details. North Wall exhibitions are open 12.00–4.00pm on Saturday (closed to the public on Sunday; pupils may visit the Gallery at any time). For weekday opening hours visit the website. www.stedwardsoxford.org www.thenorthwall.com

OXFORD LIFE

Books for the Senses Rub, stroke, chew, wear, sniff – this exhibition ‘Sensational Books’ explores our experiences of the book beyond reading. Structured around six senses of sight, sound, taste, smell, touch and proprioception – the sense of self movement and body-perception – this exhibition unlocks a world of sensory engagement with books. You can explore how early books and manuscripts engaged with the senses, in ways similar to more recent works by book artists in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Using dynamic and interactive elements from sound artists, tactile displays and even a smell wall, this exhibition celebrates the book in all its forms. ST Lee Gallery, Weston Library. Free admission. Until 4th December.

Environmental Exhibition Start a discussion about environmental damage at the exhibition ‘Waste Land’ at the Oxford University Museum of Natural History. A new exhibition of the aerial photography of American photographer and climate activist, J Henry Fair, featuring groundbreaking images of the environmental damage caused by mining, manufacturing, agriculture, and energy generation. Capturing the electric colours and patterns of vast landscapes, extreme temperatures and awesome scale, the photos simultaneously resemble masterful abstract paintings and reveal the terrible extent of the damage being inflicted on the earth. Oxford University Museum of Natural History, Upper Gallery – 10.00 to 17.00. Free admission. Until 20th November.

A College with a Deer Park One of the most beautiful Oxford colleges, Magdalen College was founded in 1458, so it is steeped in history and is worth visiting for the breath-taking buildings, delicate statues, and of course, inspiration for future studies! Situated at the end of the High Street, it is open to visitors throughout the year, with the Hall, Chapel, and Old Kitchen Bar granting you an insight into life at the college. Like Teddies, Magdalen enjoys 100 acres of grounds, so you can head into the gardens and parkland to enjoy Addison’s riverside walk along the Cherwell and see the famous deer park. No need to book in advance, just turn up. Tickets: Adults £8; children £7; Family ticket £25.

Board Game Café Thirsty Meeples is a café all about sharing the love of board games. Situated in Gloucester Green, you can book a table and play as many games as you want from their library of over 2,700 titles. The games are organised by genre and the friendly ‘Game Gurus’ are on hand to make recommendations depending on the number of players in your group, the type of games you enjoy and how much time you have available! They also help you set up and explain the rules. There is table service to keep you refreshed whilst you play and they are open all day and evening. Price: £6 per adult adults and children over 12.
