40 ST EDWARD’S CHRONICLE

Cricket By Peter Swainson, Master i/c Cricket The Cricket Club went from strength to strength last term, regularly putting out 12 boys’ teams and formally launching a girls’ team who played a number of fixtures. Remarkably, thanks in part to the glorious weather we enjoyed, over 110 fixtures were played in total, spread evenly across the years and different teams. The Yearlings As, with Toby Kershaw and Stanley Brown to the fore, promised much for the future after an excellent season featuring wins against MCS, Rugby, Winchester, Eton, Cheltenham and Wellington. The Yearlings Bs and Cs had more difficult seasons, losing players throughout the term due to injury and unavailability. However, they continued to work hard in training and their efforts were finally rewarded with fine wins against Cheltenham. The highlight for the Yearlings Ds was their 59 run victory against Rugby. The Junior Colts As, with wins against MCS, Bradfield, Winchester, Marlborough and Harrow, also enjoyed a highly successful season with captain, Kunal Barman, leading from the front with both bat and ball. The Junior Colts Bs had much early season success, with notable victories against Bradfield and Harrow, but tired as the term progressed. The Junior Colts Cs were another success story with excellent victories against Rugby, Bradfield and Cheltenham. The decision to merge the Fifth and Sixth Forms this year, thus creating a Senior Cricket Club, bore real fruit; allowing us regularly to field four XIs. The 3rd and 4th XIs played a number of fixtures, though with limited success, whilst the 2nd XI, a very talented group of boys, finally got their act together in the field to record fine victories against Marlborough and, most memorably, Radley, with Rob McKersie scoring ten runs (a six followed by a four) off the last two balls of the game to give them a three wicket victory! The girls’ XI had a lot of fun over the course of the term, whilst also learning a tremendous amount, developing their core batting and bowling skills and their general understanding of the game. However, by beating Radley in their final regular season fixture, the XI did manage to win the John Harvey Cup for a remarkable fourth time in six seasons.

now a genuine summer sport option for the girls, it will undoubtedly go from strength to strength. The 1st XI had a somewhat mixed season, with notable victories against Malvern, Rugby, Bradfield, Winchester, Marlborough, Radley and two touring sides, Christ’s College from New Zealand and
