St Edward's Chronicle Summer 2018
39 ST EDWARD’S CHRONICLE
Harriers By Philip Mallaband, Master i/c Harriers Although the Harriers’ race calendar was somewhat curtailed due to poor weather, we competed well in the races entered. The first race of the term was the Oxfordshire County Championships held at Radley. Everyone raced hard round the challenging course, and Matthew Thornton and Georgia Heath were both unlucky not to make the county team, both narrowly missing out on a top eight spot. At the Wellington Relays, the pick of the performances was the senior boys’ team (Matthew Thornton, Alfie Armitage- Hookes, Oli McCrum, Joe De Ferranti, and Fergus Flory), who finished in an excellent 3rd place behind Harrow and Abingdon, and beating 15 other teams including Bradfield, Caterham, Winchester, and Brighton. We then raced well at the
Radley Relays, with Matthew Thornton posting the quickest senior boy’s time of the day (11:39), leading the team to first place. Georgia Heath was the fastest senior girl (14:52). The final race of the season was for the boys at Winchester. The race was tough, both in terms of the course (hilly) and the competition (quick), but it was good to attend this race after a couple of years of missing (or perhaps avoiding?) it. I would like to thank everyone who has represented the Harriers this year – cross-country running takes a lot of dedication, and the coaches have only ever been proud of the team. There is a good crop of Fifth and Lower Sixth Formers coming through, and the Harriers should continue to be competitive in 2018-19.
