Shaping the Future of Learning at St Edward's

The new Christie Centre, Olivier Hall, Roe Reading Room and Oxley Library at St Edward's School

Shaping the Future of Learning at St Edward’s

The Christie Centre The university-inspired Academic Centre houses uplifting new spaces designed for the way young people learn today: the Roe Reading Room, the Oxley Library, break-out spaces, flexible classrooms and a new café for collaborative, social studying. The Academic Centre is named after David Christie, 11th Warden of St Edward’s, who is recognised as one of the outstanding Headmasters of his generation.

‘Leading the way in educational initiatives is instinctive for this dynamic Oxford school.’ TATLER SCHOOLS GUIDE The academic programme at St Edward’s is forward-looking and innovative. Academic results have soared in recent years and there is no doubt that the impressive university-style facilities now open in the Quad will bring further vitality to an already dynamic intellectual culture. We are pleased to mark the completion of the Quad Development by announcing the names of the new buildings and rooms: The Christie Centre, The Olivier Hall, The Oxley Library and The Roe Reading Room. We look forward to sharing the spaces with you in person as soon as circumstances allow.

The Olivier Hall The 1,000-seat Hall will allow our growing community to come together for concerts, performances and countless other occasions, and will be shared as often as possible with

the wider community. The Hall is named after

Laurence Olivier OSE (Mac’s, 1921–1924), the celebrated actor and director who became the Founding Director of the National Theatre in 1963.

The Oxley Library The modern, busy Library has been created with lively conversation and discussion in mind. The themes in this brightly-coloured space are sharing ideas and learning together. The Library is named after Malcolm Oxley, who taught History and other subjects at St Edward’s for nearly 40 years (1962 – 1999). He was also Director of Studies, a Housemaster and Second Master (Sub-Warden) during his influential Teddies career.

The Roe Reading Room

Inspired by the libraries of Oxford University, the Roe Reading Room on the top floor of the Christie Centre is a Sixth Form space for quiet, independent study. The Reading Room is named after Derek Roe OSE (Apsley, 1950–1956), former Professor of Palaeolithic Archaeology at the University of Oxford, who gave outstanding service as a Governor of St Edward’s for 44 years.
