68 ST EDWARD’S CHRONICLE
Badminton By Michael Bunch, Head of Badminton The Badminton Club was reinvigorated last year by a large influx of new members. As a relatively new sport in the games programme, the Club has grown from a sport only offered at Sixth Form, to now being available to pupils right from the Shell. This is down to a dedicated group of pupils and staff who have supported the growth of the sport. Badminton now provides a healthy number of fixtures throughout the year. It was a pleasure to see the junior members enjoying their time on the court despite it being the first time that many of them had played. Perseverance and dedication led to encouraging performances by the juniors in matches against MCS and D’Overbroeck’s and, whilst results didn’t always go their way, the improvements they
in three out of four games, winning the final two nail-biting encounters 28-26 and 23-21. Our 3rd and 4th pairs also did very well, winning against their corresponding pair. As a Club, we are now able to hold our own against Radley, Bradfield and Rugby, who are all well known for being very strong in Badminton. Overall, the Badminton Club was very successful last year, winning three, drawing four and losing two matches in the Easter Term, which was an impressive achievement. It was great to see new members Shun Wang, Dawood Nasir, Kourosh Jaafari, Karen Teng and Adriane Yeung establishing themselves as key members of the team. The Club is in a strong position as we start the Autumn Term.
made are promising signs for the coming years. In the seniors, Captains Justin Liu and Wilson Lian led the team well with support from talented siblings Charles and Alfie Turner, who performed exceptionally well in the Autumn Term. The Club was busy with many fixtures throughout the Autumn and Easter Terms, with wins and losses throughout. One highlight was the last match of the Easter Term when the team won 9-7 against Radley after excellent performances by all pairs against very strong opposition. It was exciting to watch and credit must go to our first pair, Wilson Lian and Justin Liu, who won all their matches, and to our second pair, Karim Ishmuratov and Timothy Lin, who secured victories
