Clay Pigeon Shooting
Looking Ahead By Anthony Bartlett, Captain and Hayden Screech-Dean, Vice-Captain At the end of last term, we said goodbye to the beloved former sailing captain Archie Screech-Dean who led the team with great passion and ensured its continued success, with great support from Izzy Rogers in organising the team and events. The sailing team is looking forward to the coming year of sailing, in which we plan to continue Archie’s legacy and to improve our skills in both race tactics and adaptability between different boat types. We hope to be able to add a few more boats to our current fleet in the near future, opening up access to other regattas and generating more confidence in the team and its ability to sail. The team will be working to encourage junior sailors in the Shells and Fourths to improve and solidify their skills, looking to build a strong future for the 1st VI and to perhaps even develop a Colts team. We hope to see the return of many annual regattas, giving the team more racing experience to look forward to. We were sad to say goodbye to Dr Bowen as she has been such a great help in keeping the sailing team afloat. We wish her the very best for her new role in Scotland and we look forward to working with Miss Duffy who has taken the helm as Head of Sailing this year. the most enjoyable and rewarding for a variety of reasons. With inspiring and enthusiastic captains, Leo and Archie, plus the awesome ‘Captains’ PA’, Izzy, and wonderful colleagues to support the nine hours of training a week at beautiful Farmoor Reservoir it was difficult not to have fun. The sailors progressed well last year, despite the wind seemingly against us a lot of the time, and this is primarily as a result of the peer support within the group. The camaraderie at the reservoir is always evident and I know that it will continue. So, as Archie and I hand over the Sailing Club to new leaders I know we will both look back at years of fond memories and friendships. Keep calm and sail on. From Dr Bowen, Former Head of Sailing I had the pleasure of running the Sailing Club for two separate tenures in my nine years at Teddies. The most recent was
By Nick Coram-Wright, Deputy Head Co-Curriculum An increasing number of pupils have been keen to get involved in Clay Pigeon Shooting and we have been pleased to be able to develop a partnership with the Cotswold Clay Club, based a short distance away in Farmington Quarry. We ran two training sessions on Sunday mornings during the Spring and Summer Terms and the hope is that this in turn will help to raise expertise within our Shooting Team. Sadly, gone are the days of shooting on the Canal Fields. Back in February we competed in the annual Fido May competition at EJ Churchill, where the emphasis was on giving shooting experience to some of our younger pupils. 25 teams from six other schools including Millfield, Marlborough, Bradfield and Radley were also entered. Captained by Ben Topping and Thomas Helm in the Upper Sixth, our A and B teams faced much stronger competition but congratulations to Ben who featured in the top half of the results board, with Tom only two shots behind. The second regular fixture in the calendar is the Marlborough Sporting Clay Shield, held at Barbury Shooting School in October. Back in 2019 Rory McDonnell in Apsley won the cup for the second highest boys’ shot – we will be hoping for similar success next month.
